Will Betika sponsor the CECAFA Kagame Cup again in the 2026/27 season? Following a successful tournament, the odds look good. Read on to learn more.
Football has a universal appeal with an estimated captive worldwide audience of 3.5 billion people, but nowhere else on earth quite matches the passion and love for the game that exists across Africa.
A 2024 report by GeoPoll found that 76% of sports fans surveyed in Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Tanzania, South Africa, and Nigeria had placed bets on sports, with soccer (61%, according to a 2025 survey) being the most popular choice for betting online and at betting shops.
Gambling and sports go hand in hand in Africa, and with betting companies increasingly promoting sports teams, tournaments and individuals, another high-profile sponsorship has made a crucial contribution to taking African football to the next level.
Betika Sports has made a major play for regional football in Africa, and in the process, has driven excitement and broader fan engagement by injecting $325,000 (KSh 42 million) into the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) Kagame Cup 2025/26 as the showcase’s official sponsor.
The company’s cash injection marks the largest commercial investment in the tournament's history and includes in-stadium branding, digital campaigns, and on-hand support teams in Tanzania, Ethiopia and Uganda.
The prestigious inter-club tournament, hosted in Tanzania this year, ran from September 2nd to the 15th, with participating teams from 12 regional African nations, including Uganda, represented by Vipers SC.
Mutua Mutava, Betika’s Group CEO, implied that the company had a motive other than brand building, saying:
“This is not just about funding football; it’s about investing in people, and giving the region’s immense talent a platform to shine. This is not just a sponsorship, it is a statement of belief in the power of football to unite, inspire, and transform communities.”
CECAFA Vice President, Paulos Andemariam, the co-signatory of the landmark deal, also welcomed the sponsorship, saying:
“With Betika joining as the official sponsor, we are taking this great tournament to a new era. This partnership reflects the power of collaboration between football and the private sector, and it demonstrates the confidence that a leading brand like Betika has in the value and potential of CECAFA competitions.”
CECAFA has yet not release any scheduling or sponsorship plans for the tournament in the future. Still, one would surmise that the success of the competition from the association’s standpoint and the company’s positive brand awareness exercise would invite a repeat, possibly in Uganda, which has hosted the event before.
According to GeoPoll’s Betting in Africa survey conducted in April this year, Uganda has one of the highest betting participation rates on the continent, with a staggering estimate of 87% of the adult population engaged in some form of gambling.
